President's Message

From Chris Shaffer, Midwest Chapter President
Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA

As I enjoy the blooming flowers of May and the relaxation of gardening, it occurs to me that we’re almost halfway through the year and there’s still lots to do!

President.jpg

We’ve been in a bit of a lull since the spring executive board meeting in Madison this past March and I’m sure lots of you are getting ready to attend the MLA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia next week. I’m looking forward to a productive summer and will be contacting officers and committee chairs after Memorial Day to get things started again.

The Website Redesign Task Force is moving along. The board had lots of good suggestions and many of you provided helpful feedback in the survey. Thanks! The task force members are investigating similar websites and considering ways the web can help us conduct our business both publicly and privately. Our goal is to have a new chapter website and intranet to unveil at the 2007 Joint Chapter Meeting in Omaha.

I had a lot more to write, but Deborah Lauseng did such a great job with the spring executive board meeting report below that my job for this issue is done. ☺

Spring Board Meeting Report

Submitted by Deborah Lauseng, Midwest Chapter Secretary
Taubman Medical Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

The Midwest Chapter Executive Board held its first meeting following the approval of the revised chapter bylaws on March 16, 2007 at the Ebling Library, University of Wisconsin, Madison. The most obvious change was the composition in the board with fewer people in attendance. The board includes the elected officers, with only one representative at large, committee chairs and appointed officials.

Business Highlights

A major new business item was drafting charges for each of the standing committees outlined in the bylaws. Procedural information will be placed in a separate procedures manual. New or reorganized committees include Communications, Professional Practice, and State Liaisons. President Chris Shaffer will be finalizing the charges for the fall executive board meeting.

The Awards & Scholarships Committee recommended the rewording of the Annual Meeting Scholarship Award to clarify the support of a Midwest Chapter member who has never attended an annual conference. Following discussion, the board recommended that the committee consider rewording the Scholarship Award to be specifically for students and/or recent graduates and to create a new award to promote first time attendees at the annual conference for librarians already in the chapter.

The Communications Committee will be incorporating a disclaimer concerning photographs taken at the annual meetings and their potential use in online chapter publications. The statement, which will appear on conference registration and on annual membership forms, will also ask anyone not wanting their photograph to appear to contact the Communications Chair Elizabeth Smigielski.

The Membership Committee will be designing and purchasing a traveling exhibit. The chapter exhibit can be used at state conferences and for library school recruitments. Funds have also been set aside to cover the cost of shipping the exhibit to members exhibiting on behalf of the chapter.

Chris Shaffer has appointed the Website Redesign Special Committee. This special committee is charged with evaluating, planning (including site architecture and visual design), implementing, and testing of a new Midwest Chapter website. Brian Finnegan is the chair.

The Executive Board extended their thanks and appreciation to Terry Burton and the library staff of Ebling Library, University of Wisconsin, for hosting the spring board meeting in Madison.

Website Redesign Survey Results

Submitted by Brian Finnegan, Website Redesign Committee Chair
G. E. Magnin Medical Library, Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI

Thank you to everyone that completed the Midwest Chapter/MLA Website Redesign survey. We had 113 responses, which is a great number!

The vast majority (over 80%) of the respondents are infrequent visitors to the Midwest Chapter/MLA website. They report visiting only monthly or less, perhaps most visits occur as annual conference time approaches. The most commonly visited areas of the site are the MIDLINE and the annual conference areas.

Regarding the comments from respondents, a few themes emerged:

  • Keeping the content current and verifying the accuracy of links

  • A membership database that has active email address information and possibly member’s areas of expertise

  • More in the area of education topics and recommended readings: technology, value of libraries, grant opportunities, etc.
  • It seemed like respondents were generally happy with the MIDLINE newsletter, and annual conference information.

    Common recommendations for improvement included:

  • Checking the accuracy of links, some pages not updated on a regular basis

  • Have a more current look and feel, especially the graphics

  • Simpler/easier navigation scheme

  • Make the CE and annual conference information more prominent
  • Additional ideas generated by the survey:

  • Add a blog or RSS feeds for conference and membership information

  • Include a Google search tool

  • Make committee information (chairs, members, etc) more prominent

  • Verify that navigation labels match the content

  • Scultetus Digitized

    Submitted by Ed Holtum
Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA

The Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa recently digitized and made available on the web, the stunning illustrations from Johannes Scultetus’ 1655 Armamentarium chirurgicum..., one of the most important surgical works of the 17th century. The book was acquired by Dr. John Martin (1904-1996) in the late 1970’s, one of thousands of rare medical texts he acquired over his lifetime and subsequently donated to the University of Iowa. The John Martin Rare Book Room, one of the finest collections of its kind, is named in his honor.

Scultetus, born at Ulm on the Danube, was a pupil of Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente and Adriaan van de Spiegel at Padua and eventually settled in Ulm as the city physician after having practiced for a time in Padua and Vienna. This "arsenal of surgery" was published a decade after Scultetus’ death by his nephew, Scultetus the Younger. The work is best known for its arresting illustrations, including engravings illustrating such procedures as amputation of the breast, reduction of dislocations, forceps delivery, and surgical procedures on the eye.

    scultetus.JPG

The engravings were captured at high resolution and then processed using CONTENTdm digital collection management software. The Scultetus images are part of a larger digitization project undertaken by Hardin Library staff members. Works selected for scanning and digitizing are selected on the basis of their importance and interest to medical historians, artists, illustrators, and the general user. Care has been taken not to duplicate digitization projects undertaken by other sites. Users are encouraged to browse the collections, to point to them from other sites, and to copy them for use in their own work, provided that appropriate attribution is made.

The Scultetus images together with illustrations from eight additional works can be viewed at the Images from the John Martin Rare Book Room website.

    State Meeting Report:
    Indiana Health Sciences Librarians Association

    Submitted by Joan Zivich
Lacera Memorial Library, Community Hospital, Munster, IN

The Indiana Health Sciences Librarians met in Lafayette on April 26 and 27 for their annual meeting.

On Thursday afternoon, they attended a great class on health statistics given by Professor Charles Wessel of the University of Pittsburgh. Attendees walked away armed with very useful information about accessing health statistics on the web and a most useful bibliography. The class was followed by a tour of the brand new Nanotechnology Center at Purdue University’s Discovery Park. The librarians were very impressed by the presentations on the facility and its goals that were given by center professors and by the tour of the building. The collaborative research being done at this facility in nanotechnology is truly “cutting edge” and very exciting!

Friday was filled with a very useful presentation by Julie Esparza, Deaconess Hospital, Evansville on calculating the dollar value of medical libraries and their services; a most interesting presentation on the IUMC Library’s HIV/AIDS Information Outreach Grant by Kellie Kaneshiro, Ruth Lilly Medical Library; an insider’s view of grant writing from our expert, Peggy Richwine, Ruth Lilly Medical Library; time viewing and visiting with our exhibitors; and lively roundtable discussions.

We were also very happy to welcome back an emeritus member and past IHSLA President, Ruth Pape. We are looking forward to our 2008 meeting in Indianapolis where we will greet our old friends, meet our new members, and learn something new.

    State Meeting Report:
    Kentucky Medical Library Association

    Submitted by Ann Schaap,
Norton Healthcare Medical Library, Louisville, KY

On Tuesday, May 1 the Kentucky Medical Library Association met at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Lexington for a business meeting and an electronic journals course taught by Stephanie Nicely Aken, Electronic Resources Coordinator for the University of Kentucky. The cowboy/western theme of the course was “Herding E-Journals and E-Books.” Attendees were greeted by Lonnie Wright from Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington who was dressed in complete Western garb.

    KMLA.JPG

This theme was carried throughout the day as attendees learned about purchasing models (Throwing the Lasso), licensing, ILL policies, downloading limits, and passwords (E-Journal Drive: reining ’em in & keeping ’em in line). At lunchtime the group savored cowboy chow consisting of barbecue, cole slaw and chocolate cake.

During the business meeting chaired by new President James Burgett from the University of Kentucky Medical Center Library in Lexington, discussion centered on meeting sites for the remainder of the year, the development of bylaws for the newly merged group, the status of the KMLA treasury, and other topics.

After lunch the presentation covered DOAJ, HighWire and freemedicaljournals.com (Round-Up: Catching the strays) and perpetual access issues, LOCKSS, PORTICO and institutional repositories (Putting ‘em out to pasture), and finally a brainstorming session (Stampede!) on what KMLA members can do to increase accessibility and service for its members. After the wrap-up and evaluation, KMLA attendees left the meeting enthused for the future of the newly merged group!

Thirty-four participants attended the spring meeting of Ohio Health Sciences Library Association held on April 20, 2007 at the Medical Heritage Center of the Prior Health Sciences Library on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus. The CE course, “Geeks Bearing Gifts: New Technology Trends” presented by J. Dale Prince, Technology Coordinator of the NN/LM Southeastern Atlantic Region, began in the morning and was conducted in the computer lab. Prince delivered a “fun, fast-paced” hands-on introduction to today’s technology trends. Participants were encouraged to explore various websites related to RSS and received an overview of developments in mobile computing, blogs, wikis, and radio-frequency identification.

    Ohio.jpg

President Ximena Chrisagis conducted the business meeting in conjunction with the buffet luncheon. Following Clare Leibfarth’s update from the Ad Hoc Preliminary Planning Committee, it was announced that Bette Sydelko and Marlene Porter would be co-chairs for the 2009 Midwest Chapter Annual Conference to be held in October in Columbus. Outgoing executive leaders were recognized and thanked for their contributions to the organization in 2006-2007.

    Wisconsin Health Science Library Association

    Submitted by Karen Hanus
Medical College of Wisconsin Libraries, Milwaukee, WI

The Wisconsin Health Science Library Association’s 2007 Annual Meeting was held at the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee West on April 23-24, 2007. The theme was “Survivor in a Sea of Change.”

    T. Scott Plutchak from the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham kicked off the conference with an informative and interesting discussion titled “Libraries are Good But, Librarians are Essential!” One of his themes was that we need to get out of our libraries and build relationships. He urged us to re-think what we’re doing and possibly let go of the old so that we have time to do new things T. Scott had a very special audience member, his mother. T. Scott is originally from Kaukauna, WI and his mother currently lives in Appleton, WI. She had never heard him speak in a professional setting before and Scott invited her to attend. We enjoyed having a native Wisconsinite for our keynote speaker and we hope that he and his mother enjoyed the conference as well.

The afternoon survival camps (discussion sessions) were informative and thought-provoking. We want to thank our camp leaders Felicia Vastalo, Lauree Hart, Ruth Holst and Barb Ruggeri.
